PAST SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Earning a SMOG School Leaver Scholarship is an amazing opportunity for young netballers to gain exposure to high-level netball and our selection process is open to all players despite of where they may have attended their secondary school years.  Our past Scholarship recipients have done some incredible things in their sport - check them out here!

What attracted you to SMOG?  Having attended St Mary’s College, SMOG felt like the natural progression.

How have you benefited from being a SMOGGIE?  By only being with the club for a season I have made awesome friends and been welcomed into the SMOG family with open arms. I gained a variety of skill on court by various coaches and was also blessed to play alongside such experienced players, whom I have learnt a lot from.

What advice would you give Scholarship applicants in 2020?  ​​​​​​​Although we come to SMOG to play netball, the connections we make off court are just as important. The environment they have created have allowed me to grow as a player and as a person. If you would like to flourish and grow within your netball journey SMOG is the club for you.

What attracted you to SMOG?  The team environment and coaching staff

How have you benefited from being a SMOGGIE?  I’ve learnt new skills and how I can expose myself to the benefits of playing different positions, and also how I can face the differences playing both sides of the court. (Attack and Defence) 

What advice would you give Scholarship applicants in 2020?  Definitely make the most of this school leavers opportunity and to join our amazing SMOG community.

Bianca Nagaiya - 2019 Scholarship recipient

What attracted you to SMOG?  I was attracted to SMOG by the amazing coaching team, and I had heard that it was a very inclusive and hard-working environment.

How have you benefited from being a SMOGGIE?  I have been coached by some amazing people and have had the chance to develop my skills more surrounded by top players and the nicest women. I feel so confident wearing the SMOG-blue dress, playing my best out on the court with my teammates doing the same.

What advice would you give Scholarship applicants in 2020?  Get involved in the events and make the most of the welcoming environment by giving back to the SMOG community. Enjoy excelling out on the court.

Maya Stillwell - 2019 Scholarship recipient

What attracted you to SMOG?  The level of athleticism and ability within the players and high quality of coaches within the club attracted me to join SMOG. I wanted to join a club where I could still build and develop on my own performance.

How have you benefited from being a SMOGGIE?  Because I was one of the youngest members of the team i learnt a lot of the other older experienced players. I also developed my skills with the guidance of my coach Sandra Edge. I loved playing for her and learning everything she had to offer. 

What advice would you give Scholarship applicants in 2020?  Give everything a go and work hard throughout the season, you never know what could happen. Just because you may start off on the bench doesn’t mean you have to stay there, it’s your choice. I started off being a second-string attacker but worked hard to prove i could be a starter and throughout the season that’s what I became.
